Black Vulture
The Black Vulture is a scavenger, meaning they feed on carrion (dead animals). They have a bald head to maintain better hygiene while feasting on carcasses. These amazing birds efficiently clean up carrion which reduces the spread of disease in the environment. They have several adaptations that enable them to feed on dead animals such as strong digestive and immune systems.
This vulture was very young when it was admitted into our rehabilitation center. The goal when rehabilitating young animals is to ensure that they remain wild. However, on occasion, imprinting occurs. Imprinting is when a wild animal has developed a bond with humans during a critical period of its early life. Imprinted wild animals may exhibit behavior such as seeking human interaction, following people around, or displaying a lack of fear towards humans. While this may initially seem endearing, it can lead to significant challenges for the animal’s welfare. These animals may struggle to properly interact with their own species, find it difficult to fend for themselves, and may face increased risks when released.
