Northern Crested Caracara

There are two Northern crested caracaras in this enclosure. One came to our rehabilitation facility with a broken wing - likely from a car collision. This injury resulted in partial wing amputation and a resulting loss of flight abilities. The other was discovered on the ground in Western Palm Beach County, emaciated and unable to fly.  Radiographs revealed an old shoulder injury that, despite months of physical therapy, prevents this bird from sustaining flight.

There are 10 species of caracara and they can be found in Florida, Arizona, Texas, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Falkland Islands. In order to view these beautiful birds in the wild, you’ll need to set out for open country. In Florida, look for them perching on fence posts or feasting on carrion alongside other scavengers around the central parts of the state.
