White-tailed deer are incredibly agile and can jump heights of up to 8 feet and distances of up to 30 feet in a single bound. Their leaping ability helps them escape from predators and navigate through forested habitats.
Male white-tailed deer, called bucks, grow and shed their antlers annually. Antlers are one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom, with some bucks capable of growing antlers at a rate of up to half an inch per day during peak growth periods.
We have two bucks on exhibit. They each were orphaned and raised here at the Sanctuary. The deer with large antlers has a condition called cactus buck (alterations in testosterone level; in his case being neutered), causing his antlers to be bumpy.

Wild turkeys move in groups, scouring the ground for nuts, berries, insects, and snails. They use their robust feet to clear leaf litter from their path. During the onset of spring, male turkeys gather in open areas to exhibit courtship rituals. They inflate their body feathers, unfurl their tails into a fan, and strut slowly while giving a characteristic gobbling call. At night, turkeys fly up into trees to roost in groups.
