Great Horned Owl
There are two Great horned owls in this exhibit. The lighter colored owl has a wing injury. The larger, darker colored owl was kept illegally as a pet. Over 1,000 species of birds, including owls, are protected federally under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. No native owls can be kept as pets.
The Great horned owl is the stereotypical owl of storybooks with earlike tufts, yellow eyes, and deep hooting vocalizations. They are the largest species of owl in Florida and are highly adaptable birds found throughout North America in diverse habitats ranging from forests and deserts to urban areas.
