Mourning Dove
Mourning doves are commonly found throughout North and Central America. They are known for their gentle and mournful cooing sound, which gives them their name. Their vocalizations are often heard during their courtship displays and serves as a means of communication between individuals. It's a soothing and familiar sound in many urban and rural environments.
This Mourning Dove was orphaned at a young age and became imprinted.
The goal when rehabilitating young animals is to ensure that they remain wild. Our hospital team goes to great lengths to keep orphaned wild animals from getting comfortable with people. However, on occasion, imprinting occurs. Imprinting is when a wild animal has developed a bond with humans during a critical period of its early life. Imprinted wild animals may exhibit behavior such as seeking human interaction, following people around, or displaying a lack of fear towards humans. While this may initially seem endearing, it can lead to significant challenges for the animal’s welfare. These animals may struggle to properly interact with their own species, find it difficult to fend for themselves, and may face increased risks when released.
