Red-shouldered Hawk
Red-Shouldered Hawks are part of a raptor group called buteos. These raptors are characterized by their robust bodies and broad wings that are adapted for soaring flight. This hawk has a permanent wing injury which prevents it from strong, sustained flight.
Red-Shouldered Hawks can often be observed soaring above woodlands or perched on tree limbs and power lines. Their ascending, kee-rah call is familiar to anyone that lives in places where these birds are common. Red-Shouldered Hawks prey on small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.
