Sandhill Crane

Sandhill Cranes have been around for a very long time! The oldest known fossil, dating back 2.5 million years, was discovered in Florida. Sandhill cranes form lifelong bonds, selecting their mate through intricate dancing displays. During these displays, the birds extend their wings, bob their heads, bow, and gracefully leap into the air.

There are two cranes in this yard. One is here because she was orphaned at a young age and was not able to care for herself. She may be the only sandhill crane ambassador in the country and has appeared on “Late Night with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” “Today Show” and many others! The other crane has a wing injury and is unable to fly.
