Striped Skunk
Striped skunks have the ability to spray a foul-smelling liquid from their anal glands as a defense mechanism. This spray, which contains sulfur compounds, is highly effective at deterring predators and can cause temporary blindness and intense irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes or mucous membranes. Skunks usually provide warning signs, such as stomping their feet or raising their tails, before resorting to spraying.
The skunk that is on exhibit was orphaned. His mother was found deceased in a barn outside of a resident's house in Tennessee. Unaware that it’s illegal to have a pet skunk in their state, the residents took him to a vet, and had his scent glands removed. Once they were made aware it was illegal, they contacted us and we’ve had him since.
